Large Yellow Eyes Could Be Watching You!

Large Yellow Eyes Could Be Watching You!

As you walk through the yard of a home in Pierce Township, you can feel someone or something watching you; large yellow eyes capture your every move.  If you get too close, you could come in contact with a very protective mother!  This nest is home to a great horned owl and two fuzzy hatchlings.  “The great horned owl is the largest owl in Ohio,” said Clermont Parks’ Chief Naturalist Keith Robinson.  “This time of the year, they are generally tending to their broods.  The parents typically mate for life and welcome new arrivals once each year.  Both parents take turns sitting on the eggs until they hatch.”

The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) newest weapon in the war against the destructive Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) has four legs.  Three ALB-sniffing dogs are on the job in Clermont County’s Tate Township.  “All three were rescued from animal shelters,” said USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) Training Specialist Monica Errico.  “Thunder, a beagle, and two lab-mixes, R.J. and Blaze will be on the job in the county through June 8, 2012.  They are specially trained to detect the scent of the beetle and have been very effective in finding it during testing thus far.”
