Some SW Ohio counties among tops for turkeys

COLUMBUS, OH (FOX19) - Four of the Tri-State's 8 counties were among the state's top ten for turkeys taken on the first day of the spring turkey season, and among the top 15 for the number of turkeys taken per square mile.

Ohio hunters harvested a preliminary total of 2,227 bearded wild turkeys on the first day of the spring turkey-hunting season, which is open statewide through May 20, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. In 2011, a preliminary total of 2,646 wild turkeys were killed on opening day.

Top counties for wild turkeys killed on Monday were: Ashtabula-93, Coshocton-79, Tuscarawas-78, Muskingum-74, Guernsey-69, Adams-62, Highland-57, Knox-56, Brown-55 and Clermont-54.

Cincinnati Reds Launch Baseball Camp for Kids in Clermont County

There’s a new team in Clermont County, comprised of the Cincinnati Reds, UC Clermont College, Batavia Township, and the County.  “We are amazed at the welcome we have received in Clermont County,” said Reds Community Fund Executive Director Charley Frank.  The partnership is bringing the 2012 Reds Rookie Success League (RRSL) to the ball diamonds at the Batavia Township Community Center, located at 1535 Clough Pike.  “This is a coed, character building introductory baseball program for kids between the ages of 6 and 12,” said Frank.  “For four weeks, beginning on June 11, 250 children from across the county will be transported to the camp where they will be taught the sport of baseball, but more importantly, they will learn life lessons, including the importance of teamwork.”

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) -  Cincinnati Reds players Jay Bruce, Ryan Hanigan, and Drew Stubbs are teaming up with Global Environmental Services and many of Cincinnati’s leading corporations for the third annual Players for the Planet E-Waste Recycling Events on Friday, April 27; Saturday, April 28; and Sunday, April 29, 2012.   

The Players for the Planet recycling efforts provide a simple and convenient way for Reds fans and citizens of Greater Cincinnati to recycle old electronics, such as televisions, computers, radios and VCR’s. Take your items to one of the three locations below for e-waste recycling:

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, CLERMONT COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Clermont County Kennel Club will hold a two day, indoor, AKC dog agility competition on April 14 & 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. The competition will be held at the Clermont County Dog Training Club.

You can watch highly skilled dog handlers maneuver their AKC canine athletes through a variety of fast and challenging agility courses.  The organizers say the Agility Show is more than a "Beauty Pageant for Dogs."

The event is open to the public with free admission, but guests should bring a portable chair.  They should not bring their own pets: only dogs entered in the competition are permitted in the building during  the event.

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, CLERMONT COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Unleashed Agility Inc. will hold a two day, indoor, dog agility competition on March 31 & April 1 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. both days. The competition will be held at the Clermont County Dog Training Club in Milford, Ohio.

Highly skilled dog handlers will maneuver their canine athletes through a variety of fast and challenging agility courses.

The event is open to the public with Free Admission. Please bring a chair. Only dogs entered in the competition are permitted in the building during  the event.

Clermont County Dog Training Club, Inc. is a non-profit organization established in 1974. The club offers classes in obedience, conformation, agility and rally. COLUMBUS, OH (FOX19) - The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife reports that 219,698 deer were taken during Ohio's 2011-12 hunting season, compared to 239,379 in the 2010-11 season.

The top three counties with the highest number of deer taken this season were: Coshocton, Licking and Tuscarawas.  Tri-State counties ranked from 15th for Adams County 64th for Clinton County, out of Ohio's 88 counties.  First-place Coshocton County in eastern Ohio had 7,969 deer reported, while last-place Fayette County (along 71 just southwest of Columbus) only had 282.

Hamilton County had the most by far among Ohio's urban counties, outpacing Franklin County by 2255 to 846.

COLUMBUS, OH - Hunters took 19,251 deer during Ohio's muzzleloader season, January 7-10, with Coshocton County again leading the state with 722 deer checked.   In 2011, a preliminary total of 16,934 deer were taken during muzzleloader season.

Counties reporting the highest number of deer checked during the muzzleloader season included: Coshocton-722, Licking-639, Muskingum-638, Guernsey-612, Tuscarawas-581, Belmont-577, Harrison-569, Knox-470, Meigs-466, and Jefferson-465.

In Southwest Ohio, the largest total this year was Adams County, with 336.  The heaviest totals in the state are generally in the areas with the most hills and the least people, which favors rural southeast Ohio.  Among counties containing Ohio's 6 large cities, (Cuyahoga-Cleveland, Franklin-Columbus, Hamilton-Cincinnati, Lucas-Toledo, Montgomery-Dayton, and Summit-Akron), Hamilton County, which is the hilliest, had the most deer taken, at 89.
