Fort Thomas Schools starts Summer Theatre Program for high school students from all over

FORT THOMAS, KY (FOX19) - Fort Thomas Independent Schools’ Community Theatre program will add a summer theatre program this year for high school students in the Greater Cincinnati area.  Jason Burgess, teacher and theatre director at Highlands High School, will coordinate the program. “This is an idea that I have been playing around with over the last couple of years and am now pulling the trigger on,” says Burgess.  

This summer theatre program for high school students is called the Commonwealth Artists Summer Theatre or ‘CAST’.

UNION TOWNSHIP, CLERMONT COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - The West Clermont School a capella pop ensemble West Clermont by Request will perform a Saturday Night Live parody "By Request Live" on   the next two weekends.

In April of 2012 West Clermont by Request is going to New York for an educational trip.  In order to help fund this trip, this production was created as a fundraising event. These students are performing over 15 skits from the most famous of skits from the SNL series, including the Motivational Speaker, Celebrity Jeopardy, Cowbell and many others. 

West Clermont By Request is a high school pop a cappella ensemble, part of the Glen Este Vocal Music Department, located on the Glen Este High School Campus in Clermont County. By Request is a select group of top singers made up of students in the West Clermont Local School District.

Batavia schools to allow personal laptops and smart phones

BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) - Batavia Local Schools will soon incorporate a pilot program that will allow students to bring their personal laptops and smart phones into the classroom. 

"We'd like to get to that one to one point where each student has their own device," said Batavia School Director of Technology, Jason Shoemake.

Those for the proposal say it puts the district on the cutting edge of the information highway and saves the district money. 

"Overall I don't think it would be a bad thing as long as they are used for school," said parent Lisa Bourque.

Those against the proposal have concerns that students will take advantage of the privilege by testing, or surfing the web.

SHARONVILLE, OH (FOX19) - Area elementary and middle school students will demonstrate their science knowledge and engineering technology skills this weekend at the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) District Championships and Junior FIRST LEGO League Expo, held by iSPACE at the Scarlet Oaks Career Campus in Sharonville on Saturday, January 21.

43 teams of students from local public and private schools will gather.  The FLL challenge this year is called “Food Factor” and the Jr.FLL is “Snack Attack.”  With missions including pollution reversal, pest control and food storage and preparation, teams will have to program their LEGO MINDSTORMS® robots to explore the growing questions around how to safely get food from its source to consumption.

The FIRST LEGO League students will also demonstrate how they programmed a LEGO robot to perform a series of tabletop tasks.

Three English faculty at UC Clermont College honored

 

BATAVIA TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Three English professors at UC's Clermont College have been honored for their poetry, fiction, and nonfiction recently.

Assistant Professor of English Phoebe Reeves’ poem "The Folly of Mercutio in a Pacifist Town," first published in The American Poetry Journal, and reprinted at Verse Daily (http://www.versedaily.org/2011/pacifisttown.shtml) has been nominated by Editor J.P. Dancing Bear for a Pushcart Prize. Winning literature from a number of different genres is published in an anthology.

Joel Peckham, assistant professor of English, has received two recent accolades for his work. His essay, "Please Take What You Want," was listed as a "Notable Essay" in Best American Essays 2011, edited by Edwidge Dandicot.  His recent book, Resisting Elegy: On Grief and Recovery, was a finalist for the New Rivers MVP prize and will appear in hardcover from Academy Chicago Publishers this spring.

UNION TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Kindergarten registration for the West Clermont school district will be held during the month of March, 2012.

Registration is by appointment only, and will be held at the West Clermont administrative office located in the Union Township Civic Center at 4350 Aicholtz Road.

Local basketball teams donate to Shriners Hospitals for Children

SHARONVILLE AND MILFORD, OH (FOX19) - Princeton High School Vikings and Milford High School Eagles raised over $1500 for Shriners Hospitals for Children at the annual Vikings Foundation Charity Basketball Game that was played this past November.

A check presentation with the Princeton Boys Basketball Team will be held at Princeton High School (enter through main entrance) at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10.
