Less-extreme gas prices few and far between after another major increase

Less-extreme gas prices few and far between after another major increase

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - After the second major rise in gas prices in 5 days, prices at the vast majority of Tri-State gas stations were at $3.39 (ignoring the last digit) as of Friday afternoon.  Those prices are just for regular, with premium now typically at $3.59 a gallon.

Barring another hike, individual gas stations may start slowly droppng their prices to gain business from neighboring stations, although that didn't have much time to happen earlier this week, when most stations raised prices on Monday or Tuesday to 3.29, then raised them again Friday morning to 3.39.  It's also possible that some of the stations with lower prices only have them because they haven't gotten around to joining the price hike yet

Here are prices that were less than four hours old as of 5 p.m.

Lowest gas prices hard to find, low prices impossible

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) – If you want the lowest gas prices in the area, your best bet is to be in Middletown or to be a member of a club store.

If you want gasoline for under 3 dollars a gallon, you’ll need a time machine.

Prices took off like a jump jet Monday or Tuesday, according to the chart on the FOX19 Gas Price Tracker page.  Last week a number of stations had prices of $3.03 or lower; after the price hike was over, the average price for regular was around $3.29 a gallon, with few stations varying much from that average.

The lowest prices were in scattered spots around Southwest Ohio.   Motorists who report prices observed the Costco and Sam’s Club locations along Fields Ertel Road in Mason and Loveland charging 3.09 (omitting the fractional .9 cents)  for regular.   A number of stations on Middletown’s northwest side nearest the airport and Miami Unive

Schmidt introduces bill to let heavier trucks on highways

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, CLERMONT COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Congresswoman Jean Schmidt (R-Miami Twp.) is joining a Democrat from Maine in reintroducing a bill that would allow heavier trucks in interstate commerce.

Previous versions of the bill have drawn support from due to lower costs for drivers and fuel and the safety advantage fewer trucks on the road, while opponents cited more damage to road surfaces, more danger for motorists due to the trucks' weights, and job losses for drivers.  Heavier trucks are already permitted within certain states, but not on interstates.

Batavia Schools lay out challenges

BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) - The Batavia School District is pursuing a 6.9 mill school levy in May, but they may have a tough hill to climb both with voters and finances.

In a presentation this week, the district said that they really would like more than 6.9 mills, but doesn't think that would pass. So they are offering a levy that will leads to some spending cuts if it succeeds, and even more if it fails. They and other districts in the state are expecting a 10 to 20 per cent cut in state funds due to Ohio's budget problems. Since 60 per cent of Batavia's money comes from state funding, that means a 6 to 12 per cent reduction.

The district commissioned a survey that indicates that voters support the May levy by a narrow 46-42 per cent margin, with 12 per cent undecided or not answering the question. Some other numbers may have them more pessimistic.

UNION TOWNSHIP, CLERMONT COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - Ohio Second District Congresswoman Jean Schmidt (R-Miami Township) has opened a new satellite office in Clermont County.

The Union Township trustees agreed to lease her an office inside the Union Township Civic Center on Aichholtz Road.

The board made the offer after Schmidt decided to close her existing office in a county building in Batavia, after one of the county commissioners had brought up the idea of selling the building, which once had several offices in it but recently only had Schmidt's office, along with some computer facilities.  The office closed last week.  Schmidt's main office is in Kenwood.

Union Township Vice-Chairman Matt Beamer said "We feel it is important for her to have a presence in Clermont County, and Union Township is so well-traveled,  I think having an office here will be beneficial not only to the business people and resid

BATAVIA (FOX19) - 2nd District Congresswoman Jean Schmidt is closing a longtime office in downtown Batavia, but her staff expects to announce a location for a new office in the next few days.

The part-time office has been in a county-owned building on Main Street, but the county has moved its other offices out of the building, leaving only the small Congressional office and some county technical facilities.

A spokesperson said they want to maintain a Clermont County office and are working on a deal to do so. He wouldn't say what town the office will be in until the lease goes through. He said they just need a small space, but the government requires them to only sign a two-year lease to match a congressional term, which is shorter than many business landlords want.
