Accidental Falls for Seniors can be Prevented | News

BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) - The Board of Clermont County Commissioners announced on Monday that September 16-22 has been proclaimed Accidental Fall Awareness Week.

With 11.8 percent of Clermont County's population being age 65 and older, the Clermont County Senior Safety Program wants local seniors to know they have somewhere to go for help when it comes to avoiding accidental falls.  The Clermont County General Health District created the Senior Safety Program to help seniors reduce the risk of injury.

The program offers free fall prevention educational materials, fall prevention activities, and free home safety checks to identify potential in-home safety hazards.

"Accidental falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among people over the age of 65," said Clermont County Commission President Bob Proud.  "It is also the leading cause of doctor visits, hospital admissions, and emergency room visits."

"For many older citizens, falling and even the fear of falling, can lead to depression, isolation, diminished mobility, and a loss of independence," said Senior Safety coordinator Denise Franer.  "The Senior Safety Program, along with the Senior Safety Coalition and other healthcare partners are working to reduce the likelihood of falls and support older citizens in maintaining health, and remaining safe and secure in their homes and communities."
