Former Batavia assistant football coach jailed for drug possession
News

BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) -- A Bethel man who is a former an assistant football at Batavia High School spent this weekend in jail on charges of felony drug possession and driving under suspension.

Steven Daugherty Jr., 38, of Bethel was arrested by Bethel police Saturday.  Police told FOX19 that when they stopped him, they found what appeared to be heroin in his car.  The powdered substance has been sent to a laboratory for testing.

A board member at Batavia Schools says Daugherty was a non-staff assistant coach for the Batavia football team last fall.  The board member says it was unlikely Daugherty was coming back next fall even if he hadn't been arrested, because of changes on the coaching staff.

A judge released Daugherty on his own recognizance Monday.  He is due back in court at the end of the month.
