NEW RICHMOND, OH (FOX19) - The village of New Richmond is once again gearing up for the 20th annual International Cardboard Boat Regatta, on Saturday, August 18, along a 200-yard course on the Ohio River shoreline in New Richmond; check-in and inspection for participants will begin at 11 a.m., and the Regatta will shove off at 1 p.m.
“It’s not too late to get some cardboard, tape, and paint, and build your own boat,” said one of the event organizers Ray Perszyk. “The key to building a cardboard boat that can float and carry weight is a LOT of paint!” The boats are designed to hold anywhere from one to six people, and can be as simple or complex as you want! Twenty-five trophies will be awarded in several different categories, including numerous awards for creativity, youth and adult speed heats, the new Paddle Wheeler award, the popular Titanic award for the most spectacular sinking, and the Cardboard Man Endurance Trophy!
In 2011, 52 boats competed in the International Cardboard Boat Regatta, with names like The Eliminator, Twisted Lemon, USS Sinker, Nemo, and The Box Turtle! “We invite everyone young and old to come out and watch the race,” added Perszyk. “Seeing all the colorful cardboard boat creations is a spectacular sight!”
The International Cardboard Boat Regatta is part of the three-day RiverDays celebration in New Richmond. RiverDays will be held from Friday, August 17 through Sunday, August 19 along Front Street in New Richmond, where everyone can enjoy the Custom and Classic Car Show, rides, games, hourly live music, and fireworks.
