The Williamsburg to Batavia Hike/Bike Trail Planning Committee is hosting the fundraiser event that will feature a pig roast, musical entertainment and a silent auction to help raise funds for this scenic trail. Last year approximately $6,000 was raised to fund project costs. Mary Ann Lefker, Mayor of the Village of Williamsburg, said “We got amazing support for our first fundraising effort last year and hope to repeat the success and enthusiasm this year in the new location which will provide us with more space for our supporters.”
Lefker said they’re getting closer to launching construction of Phase II, which should begin this year. The Mayor described her enthusiasm for this stage of the project, “The bigger picture is what we have to offer overall,” Lefker said. She explained that she is excited about the future completion of the trail and also about how the trail will provide access to different destinations in the community. “Our goal has always been to provide campers and park visitors an option to hike or ride into the surrounding communities where they can experience different activities and head back for a family campout. The idea of connecting East Fork State Park, the YMCA and UC East with our surrounding communities - is all very fun!”
The Williamsburg to Batavia Hike/Bike Trail project originated from the State Route 32 Corridor development as a vision to help boost economic development by connecting East Fork State Park to local communities. Chris Clingman, the Clermont County Park District Director said, “Initially there was not even an obvious route for the envisioned trail, so Mayor Lefker and Deborah Clepper hiked the unused roads and generated a route from scratch!” The trail currently covers 2.5 miles and travels from Broadway Road in Williamsburg into the park. Phase II of the project will join the existing trail to the campground in the park. When complete, the 13 to15 mile trail will connect the Villages of Batavia and Williamsburg, passing through the Spring Valley Wild Life preserve and the East Fork State Park by using many roads that were abandoned after the construction of William H. Harsha Lake.
The trail is collaboration between the Clermont County Park District, Batavia Township, the Village of Batavia, Williamsburg Township, the Village of Williamsburg, East Fork State Park, the Army Corps of Engineers, Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife, the Clermont County Engineer’s Office, Clermont County Commissioners, the Clermont County YMCA and University of UC East. According to the Clermont County park district, funding for the trail is coming from grant money, local government, community support and fundraiser events like the Rock and Roast event.
The event will be held inside the Clermont College Student Activity Center, known as “the bubble.” Tickets are $20 per person or $200 for a table sponsorship with recognition. “The fundraiser money is an enormous help. Every grant requires some sort of local matching money or in-kind work,” Mayor Lefker said. “When I see how much has gotten done by sheer willpower and local support, it is a little mind-boggling and we are truly grateful.”
