BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) - The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 649 invites Clermont County citizens to the second annual Flag Retirement Ceremony, set for Sunday, June 10, 1 p.m., at the Union Township Civic Center, located at 4350 Aicholtz Road.

“Last year we disposed of around 3,000 American flags that were too worn and tattered to be displayed,” said VVA Board member Steve Tam.  “The ceremony involves cutting the flags into strips, burning the pieces, and then burying the ashes in an air tight container.  It is a very respectful ceremony.”

Teen who raped 5-year-old girl apologizes during sentencing

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19)- The 13-year-old boy who raped a 5-year-old girl at a McDonald's playland was sentenced on Tuesday.

Hamilton County Juvenile Court Judge John Williams sentenced the teen to an in-patient program in northern Ohio. The teen will be there until he is at least 21 years old, or as long as the court finds necessary.

"This court will watch this case like a hawk and will not do anything to endanger this community," said Judge Williams.

The teen's attorney, James Bogen, said the residential program will provide counseling for the teen's mental health problems.

Williams said he weighed the teen's mental health issues along with the predatory nature of the crime.

"McDonald's playland is someplace parents should be able to go and have full confidence the child is there for a fun time with their parent or guardian," said Williams.

Former Batavia assistant football coach jailed for drug possession

BATAVIA, OH (FOX19) -- A Bethel man who is a former an assistant football at Batavia High School spent this weekend in jail on charges of felony drug possession and driving under suspension.

Steven Daugherty Jr., 38, of Bethel was arrested by Bethel police Saturday.  Police told FOX19 that when they stopped him, they found what appeared to be heroin in his car.  The powdered substance has been sent to a laboratory for testing.

A board member at Batavia Schools says Daugherty was a non-staff assistant coach for the Batavia football team last fall.  The board member says it was unlikely Daugherty was coming back next fall even if he hadn't been arrested, because of changes on the coaching staff.

A judge released Daugherty on his own recognizance Monday.  He is due back in court at the end of the month.
